He went on to produce remarkable work until his untimely death in from a prolonged illness. Tord Gustavsen and his small ensemble of musicians have created something truly amazing with this album. To my ears Gustavsen has found a musical balance with What was said that suits his prodigious talent better than most of his recent work.
It's a cinematic album dominated by female voice and, a first for Gustavsen, uses digital atmospherics and harmonies in the the background. Made to Measure Vol. Opening with a number of Minimal Compact contributions, who are at their most experimental here, "Bat-Yam" was an abstract tapestry of gothic-rock, jazz-rock, electronic and ethnic flavours, with "Too Many Of Them" adding funk and the litany wail to their assimilated influences, while "Immer Vorbei" added the ghostly symphonic waltz and the incantation to their canvas.
This series of tracks could well be Minimal Compact's masterpiece. Aksak Maboul then took over, starting with the ambient ethnic chamber "Scratch Holiday" which wasn't far removed from what had gone on before, while "Odessa" went for the marching ceremonial symphonic piece. These tracks displayed a smoother Aksak Maboul, when compared to their previous work, but the angst-ridden piano piece "Retour Chez Les Futuristes" revisited their rock-in-opposition background. Tuxedomoon's contribution was equally seductive, they too tackling the lush symphonic burlesque theme with "Fanfare", before raising the stakes with the enticing industrial vortex "No One Expects The Spanish Inquisition" one of their most violent pieceswhile On The Wings Of Love - Various - True Eighties (CD) "Driving To Verdun" was one of their typical futurist symphonic dance-themes.
Arriving two years on from his PAN debut, Value pushes the envelope of the dystopian grime sound of his previous work by transmitting both himself and us as the listener, deeper into his own psyche. More so than ever before, he approaches his music with a graceful composed elegance that sits side by side with the relentless energy that made his early work stand out so far forward.
Value finds elements of neoclassical ambience dropped into the club context of haunted memories and ice rink rhythms that pulsate around the machines that make up this high-gloss soundworld. This LP is gritty in both the emotional and aesthetic sense, the soul-baring qualities of these tracks often amplified by juddering low-ends and distorted atmospheres.
As caustic as A Call To Arms can be at times, there is also poetry and light to be found on this record. By turns abrasive and beautiful, A Call To Arms is an arresting set of avant-garde ballads from Visionist. After being selected by Phillip Glass to perform some of his Etudes at the barbican he has gone on to record a selection of them, and here they be on delicious double vinyl.
The spaces between delicately placed notes contain a quiet, considered drama, like taking a gasp of breath without quite knowing when the exhale will come. Bach, Domenico Cimarosa and Joseph Haydn. William Basinski's now celebrated Disintegration loops, elegant pastoral loops made from looping disintegrating old tape stock the recordings had originally been recorded onto.
As the loop plays the tape disintegrates, creating a hidden recording that could only have come about due to the aging process of the medium they were recorded onto.
